Dorchester Man Arrested In Fatal Mattapan Hit-And-Run

MATTAPAN (CBS) -- A Dorchester man turned himself in early Sunday morning after police said he struck and killed a woman while driving drunk in Mattapan Saturday night.

Massachusetts State Police said Anthony Buchanan, 39, of Dorchester was speeding and driving erratically in a rented Dodge Charger Saturday night when he hit the 46-year-old Boston woman at the intersection of Morton and Canterbury Streets around 10:30 p.m. Saturday.

The woman has not yet been identified.

State Police said Buchanan stopped briefly after striking the woman, and then drove away.

Troopers found that the Charger had been rented by Buchanan from Enterprise Rent-A-Car in Dorchester, but did not find the man or the car at a Dorchester address associated with him.

Around 1 a.m. Sunday morning, Buchanan turned himself in at a Boston Police station. He was interviewed and arrested.

The Charger was found on Mount Pleasant Street in Boston and taken in as evidence in the investigation into the hit-and-run.

Charges against Buchanan include motor vehicle homicide while operating under the influence of liquor and leaving the scene of a crash that caused personal injury or death.

He is currently being held at the State Police Barracks in Milton for the long weekend, and is expected to be arraigned Tuesday in Boston Municipal Court.
