2 From Texas Killed In Shuttle Van Crash Near Logan Airport
BOSTON (CBS) — Two people from Texas were killed in a two-vehicle crash near Logan Airport early Wednesday morning.
A Subaru Legacy and a Hampton Inn shuttle van collided around 1:15 a.m. on Route 1A north, just past the Ted Williams Tunnel.
State Police said the Subaru had exited the tunnel and crashed into the rear of the bus, which had just entered 1A north from the airport.
The collision forced the bus to veer to its left. It hit the Jersey barrier and then moved back to its right, hitting the right side barrier.
Two people on the bus, 59-year-old Joseph Rodriguez, and 47-year-old Sandra Arreola of El Paso, Texas, were ejected and died at the scene.
Three other people on the shuttle bus – two passengers and the driver - were hurt.
One passenger, a 57-year-old woman from El Paso, is at Massachusetts General Hospital with serious injuries. The other, a 45-year-old man from Tampa, Florida was treated at Tufts Medical Center and released.
The shuttle driver, a 53-year-old man from East Boston, was still at Tufts as of Wednesday afternoon.
The driver of the Subaru has not been identified, but police said he is a 27-year-old man from Swampscott. He was taken to Tufts with non-life threatening injuries, but has not been released yet.
The hotel van was carrying passengers from the airport to the hotel in Revere and it had seat belts, according to police.
"Seat belt use by victims will be determined by the ongoing investigation," State Police spokesman Dave Procopio said in a statement.
"We are deeply saddened by this tragic accident and our thoughts and prayers are with the families of all who have been impacted. We are cooperating fully with police authorities," Revere Hampton Inn general manager Matthew Harrison told WBZ-TV in an email.
The Ted Williams Tunnel was closed to eastbound traffic at Exit 26 for several hours overnight.
All lanes on Route 1A re-opened just after 7 a.m.
No other information is available at this point in the investigation.
