Health Officials Warn Of Blue-Green Algae Bloom In Charles River

BOSTON (CBS) -- There's something in the water in the Charles River.

Health officials have confirmed that there is a blue-green algae bloom downstream of the Mass. Ave bridge. They're recommending that people and pets not get anywhere near it.

"If you see water that looks bright green or contains bright green strands, avoid contact with the water as much as possible and wash contacted areas after exposure," the Charles River Watershed Association says.

Blue-green algae, or cyanobacteria, can produce toxins that are harmful to humans and other mammals. It usually grows in calm, warm, shallow water and can give the water a green, paint-like appearance.
