Benintendi To DL With Knee Injury; 'Too Early To Tell' If Injury Is Season-Ending

BOSTON (CBS) -- Red Sox left fielder Andrew Benintendi has been placed on the disabled list with a sprained left knee, manager John Farrell told reporters before Thursday's game against the Tampa Bay Rays. The team has called up infielder Marco Hernandez in his place.

Benintendi injured his knee while running the bases during the Red Sox' 3-2 extra-inning loss to the Rays on Wednesday night. The left fielder had an MRI performed on his knee on Thursday, but the results are still being examined and Farrell said it's "too early to tell" if the injury is season-ending. The Boston Herald's Michael Silverman tweeted that his left ankle, which also appeared to be injured on the play, is "fine."

Benintendi is now the fourth Red Sox left fielder to go on the disabled list in 2016, joining Chris Young, Brock Holt, and Blake Swihart. Farrell called left field "our Bermuda Triangle" in his meeting with reporters.
