Tom Brady Calls Scissors Incident 'A Silly Accident'

BOSTON (CBS) --  Tom Brady won't be using scissors again anytime soon.

The Patriots quarterback addressed the media on Tuesday, following his two-day excused absence, prior to returning to the practice field later this afternoon. Brady said he "had to take care of something" during his two days away from the team, and he's happy to be back.

"It's good to be back with the team. I missed everyone," Brady said with a smile.

Brady was slated to see his first preseason action last Thursday night, and expected to get the start under center against the Chicago Bears at Gillette. But as he tried to clean dirt out of his cleat, the scissors he was using slipped and cut his thumb. The mishap didn't cause any serious damage and Brady said he felt good on Tuesday, but don't expect the QB to be participating in any arts and crafts activities anytime soon.

"The scissors slipped; it was just a silly accident," he said. "I let out a pretty loud, you know, word I wouldn't repeat in front of my kids. I went and got it checked out. I couldn't believe it. Just a silly accident."

Brady said he wanted to play against the Bears, and if it were a regular season game he would have been good to go. But he said Belichick's decision to sit him that night was the right call.

"I wanted to go, but coach said it was probably best if, for what I was going to go out and do, to take it easy," said Brady. "I wish I could have played. I miss playing and being out there with my teammates. I feel that's my responsibility, to be out there."

It's unclear if Brady will play in Friday night's preseason game against the Panthers in Carolina. The third preseason game is usually the best dress rehearsal ahead of the regular season, but with Brady suspended for the first four games, the snaps are important for Jimmy Garoppolo.

Brady said it's important to get in-game reps, especially since the quarterbacks aren't taking any hits in practice. Whether he plays or not will come down to Belichick, but Brady will be ready to go if his number is called.

"I'd like to be out there every time I get a chance to play; you only get so many opportunities a year. I'm only getting so many opportunities left in my life, so I'd like to take advantage of any opportunity, any and all of them if possible," he said. "When you see your teammates out there in their uniforms and ready to go, you want to be out there with them."

He also added that despite having to be away from the team for the first month of the regular season, he's approaching it like every other year of his career.

"I try to approach it the same way; that's been successful for me," he said. "I try do do what I need to do, that's what the routine is. We'll deal with those four weeks when they come, but in the meantime I'm preparing for this week like last year and the years before."

Just as long as there are no sharp objects involved in that preparation, everything should be just fine for Brady and the Patriots.
