Cleanup Continues In Concord After Tornado Hits

CONCORD (CBS) -- Cleanup crews returned to Concord Tuesday to remove debris left in the wake of a tornado that touched down early Monday morning.

An EF-1 tornado with wind speeds of around 100 mph hit Concord just after 3 a.m. on Monday, according to officials. High winds and flying debris damaged roofs, downed power lines, and cut off access to roads.

Hawthorne Inn Bed and Breakfast stood directly in the path of the storm, but only incurred minimal damage to the roof and a window.

"Windows started to smash, trees started to fall, and just all hell broke loose," said Hawthorne Inn owner Mark Vella. "We were incredibly lucky."

Independence and Alcott Roads were among the areas hardest hit.

Electricity in parts of the town remained shut downs during the process. Road cleaning has been quick relative to debris clearing on private residences.

Fire officials say power should be restored to most homes by Tuesday evening.

Nobody was injured during the tornado, but a worker clearing debris was hurt when a piece of tree shot out of a wood chipper. Town officials said an estimated 40 homes were damaged by the storm.
