Oak Tree Falls On Reading Home

READING (CBS) - Joan Wetzel is still a bit shocked, shocked but unhurt after a gigantic oak tree fell right into her home in Reading.

It sliced a hole in a spare bedroom but nobody was home. Joan had just come back from a bike ride, and was in the garage. "It was a crack, it was a loud crack, it wasn't as loud as you would think," she said.

"I said a few bad words, then I was just like oh I got to get the cat and the dog out of the house. And I peeked in the bedroom where the tree went in and I could see daylight so I shut the door, gathered up the animals and tried about ten times to call the police because I kept dialing it wrong."

Joan's husband is the DPW director in a nearby town and says trees everywhere are under stress. "I've seen this happen in a couple of other places and it's not, it wasn't that windy it's been windier, I think some of these big trees are just drying out," Mark Wetzel said.

The tree brought down wires and cut power to the neighborhood but nobody else was hurt either. This family has a repair bill but that's something they can live with.

"It will be a little inconvenient for a while but that's what happens," said Mark Wetzel. "Could be worse, could be in Louisiana with our house underwater or in California with a forest fire, we just have a little tree damage to deal with."
