Eduardo Rodriguez Exits Start With Hamstring Tightness

BOSTON (CBS) – Eduardo Rodriguez's night came to an unexpected end Tuesday night as the Red Sox starter left in the fifth inning with an apparent injury.

Rodriguez was off to a dominant start against Baltimore, striking out seven batters in four no-hit innings.

But with no outs in the fifth inning, Rodriguez threw a pitch, turned his back to the plate and grimaced.

Shortstop Xander Bogaerts came running in to check on Rodriguez, and a short time later manager John Farrell removed the starter from the game.

The team announced later in the inning that Rodriguez departed with left hamstring tightness, and are hopeful the injury is nothing serious.

"I think we got this early," Red Sox manager John Farrell told reporters after the game. "He felt a little bit of hamstring tightness come on towards the last hitter of the fourth inning. We checked him in between innings. There was no reduction of strength or range of motion, but it was clear the first two pitches he threw to start the fifth [that] he was not right.

"He was definitely favoring it, so we got him out of the game at the time. He feels a little bit looser postgame. We'll have a better read on this tomorrow," said Farrell.

Rodriguez said that he started feeling the tightness on his second-to-last pitch of the fourth inning. But he felt better by the end of Boston's 5-3 win, and there is hope that he'll be able to make his next scheduled start Sunday in Detroit.

"When I came out for the fifth, I was feeling like it was getting worse, so I didn't want to do something to something inside of there. I feel like we made the right decision before it got worse," Rodriguez told reporters.

Rodriguez is 2-5 on the season, which didn't start for the lefty until the end of May due to a knee injury he suffered in training camp. He's been on a great run lately, sporting a 2.52 ERA in seven starts since returning from a brief stint in Triple A.
