Boston Mayor Marty Walsh Takes A Stand -- For Cargo Shorts

BOSTON (CBS) – The Internet has officially declared men's cargo shorts to be out of style, but don't tell Marty Walsh that.

The mayor of Boston is defending his look after getting some online flack for sporting a pair of cargo shorts on a car-free Newbury Street on Sunday.

"If we're going to live in a society, we have to honor some basic principles. Starting with 'no cargo shorts,'" one critic tweeted.

The loose-fitting shorts with the bulky pockets have come under fire in recent days since The Wall Street Journal published a story called "Nice Cargo Shorts! You're Sleeping On The Sofa."

"There were so many good things about the '90s. Cargo shorts were not one of them," says one woman, who tells the Journal that she's been bringing her husband's shorts to Goodwill.

Walsh was also spotted wearing cargo shorts at a Pan-Mass Challenge event over the weekend.
