Harvard Republican Club Won't Endorse Donald Trump
CAMBRIDGE (CBS) -- For the first time in 128 years, the Harvard Republican Club won't be endorsing the GOP nominee for president.
The Harvard University group put out a statement on Facebook Thursday, explaining why they can't support Donald Trump.
"Donald Trump holds views that are antithetical to our values not only as Republicans, but as Americans," the group wrote. "The rhetoric he espouses –from racist slander to misogynistic taunts– is not consistent with our conservative principles."
The statement goes on to say that Trump's rhetoric about the disabled, prisoners of war, Gold star families, and Purple Heart recipients "is not only bad politics, but absurdly cruel."
The college Republicans say they're most concerned about Trump's temperament, and that he'd make the United States less safe.
"[Ronald Reagan] would be ashamed of Donald Trump. We are too," the statement reads.
The group does not say it will support Democrat Hillary Clinton for president, instead they say they'll focus on "reclaiming the Republican Party from those who have done it considerable harm."
