'Voice Of The T' Retiring To Start Career As Voiceover Artist

BOSTON (CBS) -- It's the voice many of us hear almost every day, but we've never seen the man behind it.

And today, Frank Oglesby, the voice of the T, retired--but his words will live on.

"They'll hear me on buses, they'll hear me on trains, they'll hear me at station platforms," says Oglesby.

His warm baritone is a calm note in the sometimes turbulent system called the MBTA. We've been hearing him for more than 20 years.

Frank is the guy who records the MBTA's announcments, like "the next Orange Line train to Oak Grove is now approaching."

Oglesby has worked 31 years for the T in operations and does the voice work as an extra, but it's clearly his first love--so he's retiring at 54 to start a new career as a voiceover artist.

But his measured, soothing voice will still be heard on trains and buses--at least for the short term.

"Sometimes folks have frayed nerves as they wait for trains or their work day could have been stressful, and I've heard back that they hear my voice and it seems to calm them," says Oglesby. "That brings me joy."

Frank would like to continue recording messages for the T, but says that's a discussion still to come.
