Report: Jamie Collins' Absence From Patriots Training Camp Not Contract-Related

By Matt Dolloff, CBS Boston

BOSTON (CBS) -- Patriots linebacker Jamie Collins, who enters 2016 without a contract extension and has a base salary under $1 million, was absent from the first day of Patriots training camp at Gillette Stadium on Thursday. Controversy!

Except, there is none - probably. Collins did report to practice on Wednesday but the reason for his absence on the field Thursday remains unknown. CSNNE's Tom E. Curran, however, tweeted that a source informed him Collins' absence was not contract-related and the team already knew that he would not be present.

Collins' absence probably (hopefully) isn't because of an injury, either, because he was never placed on any lists. Running back Dion Lewis, who was placed on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list to start training camp, was the only other Patriot not present, according to CSNNE's Phil Perry.

It's good to know Collins isn't raising a stink about his contract and reported to camp on time. That might not stop hot-takers on 98.5 The Sports Hub and elsewhere from speculating, but it's day one. This could quite easily be much ado about nothing. But Collins will be a player to keep an eye on for now, at least until he shows up on the field.
