PLYMOUTH (CBS) -- Two people were hospitalized with serious injuries after their car hit a guardrail, trapping them both.

The crash happened around 2:30 a.m. Tuesday on Route 44 near Commerce Way.

The Plymouth Fire Department said both people had to be extricated, and the driver was impaled by a piece of the crash bar that reinforced the door of the car.

Both the passenger and the driver were taken to Plymouth's Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital before being taken to Boston hospitals via medflight.

The cause of the crash was not yet known.
