Report: Yankees Trade Aroldis Chapman To Cubs
BOSTON (CBS) -- A Red Sox division rival just made a deal with the team's former GM. The New York Yankees have traded closer Aroldis Chapman to Theo Epstein's Chicago Cubs in exchange for shortstop Gleyber Torres, pitcher Adam Warren, outfielder Billy McKinney, and "likely" one additional player.
After speculation swirled about the trade, Jon Heyman first reported the deal on Twitter.
Chapman becomes the closer on a Cubs team that leads Major League Baseball with a 59-38 record and sits seventh in the National League with a 3.83 bullpen ERA. Chapman recorded 20 saves with a 3-0 record, 2.01 ERA, and 44 strikeouts in 31 1/3 innings for the Yankees in 2016.
The deal could trigger what would be a rare summer spent selling off assets for the Yankees, who are 50-48 and sit 7.5 games back of the Baltimore Orioles in the AL East. The Red Sox, meanwhile, remain buyers, as ESPN's Jayson Stark tweeted that they are still trying to do "something big" on the trade market. The 2016 trade deadline passes on August 1.
