Report: Red Sox Still Looking To Do 'Something Big' Before Trade Deadline

BOSTON (CBS) -- After Red Sox president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski sent top pitching prospect Anderson Espinoza to San Diego for Drew Pomeranz, he implied that the team may be done making major moves on the trade market. If the latest rumors hold any truth, however, Dombrowski has quickly changed his tune on that front.

ESPN's Jayson Stark tweeted Monday morning that teams are still working with the Red Sox and an unnamed source told him that the Sox are looking to do "something big." Stark mentions White Sox ace Chris Sale and Oakland A's starter Sonny Gray as possible arms the Red Sox could be targeting for a major trade, saying that the Red Sox have asked Chicago about Sale but "balked at the mammoth price tag," which was rumored to include Mookie Betts.

Stark posted a column reacting to his report, adding that the Tampa Bay Rays are "highly unlikely" to trade Chris Archer to Boston, as one might expect. He also speculated that the Mariners, Royals, and Tigers could suddenly become sellers before the August 1 trade deadline if they were to fall out of contention in the next week, but noted that it's "far from certain" that would even be a possibility.

Whatever Dombrowski and the Red Sox end up doing or not doing, it's becoming clear that the team is not done trying to add talent and Dombrowski continues to live up to his reputation as an aggressive GM.
