Keller @ Large: Trump Delegate Crossed The Line Saying Hillary Clinton Should Be Shot

BOSTON (CBS) - Campaigns are a tough, sometimes dirty business. Sharp elbows get thrown all the time, and you either learn how to give as good as you get or retire to the sidelines to nurse your wounds.

But in politics, as in life, you've got to know your limitations.

And it became clear Wednesday that New Hampshire state representative Al Baldasaro, a Trump delegate and a prominent regional supporter, doesn't know where to draw the line. He told an interviewer that for her handling of classified e-mails and the Benghazi attack - quote - "Hillary Clinton should be put in the firing line and shot for treason."

For that, Baldasaro has won himself an investigation by the Secret Service and the scorn of decent people everywhere.

Harsh criticism of Clinton is perfectly fine, in some cases well-deserved, and we're certainly hearing plenty of it at this week's GOP Convention. Trump will be the target next week when the Democrats convene.

But even in our caustic, no-holds-barred political climate, certain things should be off-limits, and suggesting that a presidential candidate be executed would certainly seem to qualify.

When we are in a rush to get somewhere and the stoplight turns red at an inopportune moment, we may be frustrated by it, even angry about it. But we don't run the red light, because it's illegal for a reason. If we ignore the reasonable boundaries of civilization, we become uncivilized, and invite chaos.

Al Baldasaro just ran the red light, and he's reportedly unapologetic about it. If you think that's ok, you're mistaken. It's not, and never will be.
