Metal Rod Crashes Through Car Windshield, Impales Armrest

MILLBURY (CBS) - A Millbury woman is thankful to be alive after a metal rod careened into her car.

Michelle Drumm was driving on the Mass Pike in Framingham last week when the 15 pound rod fell off a truck bed and shattered her windshield.

"It crashed through my windshield right above my steering wheel and went across me and impaled itself into the armrest of my driver door," Drumm said.

Drumm says it took her a few moments to realize that the rod had almost impaled her.

"I couldn't move my arm and then I was afraid to look down because I thought that the bar was through my arm or worse and then I just realized how lucky I was because it was completely up against me," Drumm said.

Drumm only suffered a little soreness in her arm. She is now imploring truck drivers to properly stow their cargo.

"Very thankful to the angels that watch over me," Drumm said. "That my family was only worrying about my deductible expenses and not planning my funeral."
