BC-BU Hockey Alum Joining Forces To Raise Money In 'Comm Ave Classic'

BOSTON (CBS) -- Boston College and Boston University have a storied rivalry on the ice, one that tends to get fairly heated from time to time.

But for the second straight year, famous alumni will be lacing up their skates to face off for a great cause: Friday night's "Comm Ave Classic" at BU's Walter Brown Arena.

All proceeds will benefit Compassionate Care ALS in honor of BC Alum Pete Frates and The Travis Roy Foundation for the former BU hockey player. Event organizer Pat Mullane, who netted 42 goals during his four-year career at BC from 2009-2013, tells WBZ NewsRadio and 98.5 The Sports Hub's Mike "Sarge" Riley that they raised over $55,000 at last year's game, and he's expecting an even bigger turnout this time around.

"It was a great event, but year two is here and we expect bigger and better things and bigger and better crowds," Mullane said of the event, which brought in 3,500 spectators in 2015. "Travis Roy and Pete Frates will both be in attendance. Having them there, all the players and all the fans are coming out to see great hockey, but at the end of the day they're coming out to support both of them. It will be extremely special for the players and the fans and make for a great night."

Mullane says their are quite a few NHL stars participating in the event, including former BC and current Calgary Flames star Johnny Gaudreau, and BC alums Jimmy Hayes (currently on the Bruins) and Kevin Hayes (now on the New York Rangers).

"The unique thing is we have three 2016 Stanley Cup champions playing: Brian Dumoulin for BC, Nick Bonino for BU and Conor Sheary, a local boy who really made a name for himself during the Stanley Cup playoffs. So quite a good group of guys," said Mullane.

Tickets can be purchased online or at Walter Brown Arena, with faceoff set for 7pm on Friday.
