Red Sox Closer Craig Kimbrel To Undergo Knee Surgery

BOSTON (CBS) – The Red Sox will be without their closer for the next three to six weeks as Craig Kimbrel will undergo surgery.

Kimbrel felt discomfort in his left knee Friday during batting practice while he was shagging fly balls.

On Saturday, the Red Sox announced that Kimbrel has been placed on the 15-day disabled list and will undergo surgery for a cartilage tear in his left knee.

The all-star closer will have surgery on Monday and is expected to miss 3-6 weeks.

Boston traded for Arizona Diamondbacks closer Brad Ziegler following Friday's game.

Right-handed pitcher Noe Ramirez was activated for Saturday's game, as was utility man Michael Martinez, who the Red Sox recently traded for.
