Thousands Arrive From Across Country For Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular

BOSTON (CBS) -- About half a million people are expected to pack the Charles River Esplanade Monday night for Boston's annual Fourth of July celebration.

At noon, the oval in front of the Hatch Shell, where Demi Lovato, Nick Jonas, Little Big Town, and Keith Lockheart's Boston Pops would later perform, was filling up.

Some of those rushing for prime spots up front had been waiting since Sunday, camping out overnight--like Carol Hunt.

"We want to be up front, and we will be," Hunt told WBZ-TV's Anna Meiler.

From crazy get-ups to decked-out hats, the spirit of the Fourth of July was everywhere.

For John Bonaccorso, it's a long standing family tradition. This is his 40th year coming to the Boston Pops.

"To see the same people, to see the Pops," he said. "There's no better place to be."

For others, it was a life goal they were eager to check off.

"My wife and I are celebrating our 50th wedding anniversary," said one man. "Coming to this has always been on our bucket list."

It's also a first time for three sisters who made the trip all the way from Texas.

"What a great place to be on the Fourth of July," said one of the sisters. "It's just wonderful."

Each person may look forward to something different--the fireworks, the performers, the 1812 Overture--but no one can forget what it's all about.

"Giving thanks to all our troops, the brave and their families," said one woman, as she showed off her patriotic hat, which she's been decorating for the event for 17 years now.

You can watch the Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular live on WBZ-TV or the CBS All Access app starting at 8 p.m., or listen to it live on WBZ NewsRadio 1030, Mix 104.1, or CBSBoston.com.
