Driver Dies After Car Flies Off I-93 Overpass

METHUEN (CBS) -- A Beverly man has died after his car flew off an I-93 overpass in Methuen Thursday afternoon.

Methuen Police said the car sped down a ramp, hit a curb, and went through two lanes the Route 110/113 rotary at around 80 mph without stopping. They said the car then took out a sign, hit the side of a hill in a construction zone, and rolled over.

The driver, a 49-year-old Beverly man, was taken to Lawrence General Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Police weren't yet sure what caused the crash, which Massachusetts State Police are investigating.

They said the driver was the only one in the car.

The crash shut down the I-93 Southbound off-ramp at Exit 46. TheRoute 110/113 rotary the car landed in is open, but down to one lane.

Police said drivers should expect delays in the area for the next three hours.
