Ikea To Recall 27 Million Dressers After Latest Child Death

BOSTON (CBS) – More than 27 million dressers and chests sold at Ikea are being recalled because they can tip over and crush children, CBS News reports.

Last summer, Ikea offered a free repair kit for its Malm chests and dressers. But after a 22-month-child died earlier this year, CBS News says the Swedish retailer is going in a different direction.

"We are announcing this recall... given the recent tragic death of a third child," Ikea said in a statement. "It is clear that there are still unsecured products in customers' homes, and we believe that taking further action is the right thing to do."

According to CBS News, the deaths of six children have been connected to the Ikea Malm dresser.

Some consumer experts say Ikea's latest step may be too little, too late.

"I don't think this this was quick enough. This product needed to come off the market," Consumer Federation of America's Rachel Weintraub told CBS News. "I wish it had been sooner, I wish that no children had been killed and no children had been injured."

Ikea is expected to release more details about the recall and how customers can get their money back in the coming days.
