Summer Of Savings: Free Historic Sites

BOSTON (CBS) - WBZ-TV's "Summer of Savings" is taking a trip back in time this week.

CASTLE ISLAND

Castle Island in South Boston is not only perfect for a fun and educational visit on a summer day – it's also free.

The first fort was built there in 1643 and was occupied by the British. When the Red Coats were forced from Boston in 1776, they gave up Castle Island but not before destroying everything on it. That's when General George Washington stepped in and ordered a new fort.

Throughout the years, Fort Independence has been rebuilt eight times. At one point it even housed a state prison. The massive granite structure we now know was completed in 1851 and was used by the military through World War II.

You can check out the grassy fort year-round, but the tour season has just begun. There are self-guided sunset tours on Thursdays from 7 p.m. to dusk and guided tours on Saturdays and Sundays between noon and 3:30 p.m.

In addition to the incredible history of Fort Independence, Castle Island is now also home to a wonderful playground, a beach, outstanding water views and you can watch the planes take off and land at Logan Airport.

You can also grab a bite at the famous Sullivan's.

STATE HOUSE TOURS

Another option for a free history lesson is on Beacon Hill. The State House is recognized as one of the most magnificent public buildings in the country.

From astonishing architecture to stunning statues narrating Massachusetts history, you can see it all for free. The state offers tours year-round on weekdays from 10 a.m. until 3:30 p.m.

BUNKER HILL MONUMENT

Over in Charlestown you can take in history with a view. It's 294 steps to the top of the massive Bunker Hill Monument, where you get to see the entire city landscape.

The massive granite structure marks the first major battle of the American Revolution. In addition to walking up the monument, talks are held at the top of every hour, describing the history of the battle and how and why it played such an important role in the revolution.

You can also visit the Bunker Hill museum across the street. The monument is open daily, but it could close if it's too hot outside. It is free, but you do need to get a pass from the museum to make the climb in the summer.
