Boston Latin Staff Rally Behind Administrators Following Resignations

BOSTON (CBS) -- A majority of the faculty at Boston Latin School urged Superintendent Tommy Chang to reject the resignations of the school's headmaster and another top administrator during a private meeting Thursday morning.

Headmaster Lynne Mooney Teta and the school's longtime Dean of Discipline Malcolm Flynn resigned from their positions this week amid investigations into the school's handling of racially-charged incidents involving students.

Boston Mayor Marty Walsh also attended the private meeting inside Boston Latin on Thursday.

"We have to work to make sure that we continue to make sure our young people that are learning in our school systems across the country are learning in a good, safe, healthy environment," Walsh said in a press conference after the meeting. "The people behind me are the ones that will provide that opportunity and that education."

Faculty members took to the steps of the school after the meeting to publicly display their support for Teta and Flynn. Many teachers denied reports that Teta's response to discriminatory incidents at the school was insufficient.

A couple staff members hijacked the microphone from Walsh during the press conference, publicly urging the administrators to reconsider. Hundreds have signed a Change.org petition requesting Chang reject both resignations.
