Red Sox Place OF Rusney Castillo On Waivers

BOSTON (CBS) -- The Boston Red Sox placed outfielder Rusney Castillo on outright waivers Saturday. The 28-year-old would clear waivers on Monday if he went unclaimed.

According to the MLB Network's Jon Heyman, who first reported the news on his blog at Today's Knuckleball, Castillo is "unlikely to be claimed," due to his exorbitant contract. Castillo is owed $32.5 million over the next three seasons with an option for 2020, plus over $2.3 million in signing bonuses.

Castillo would remain in Triple-A Pawtucket, where he has slashed just .245/.304/.320 in 2016, if and when he clears waivers. The 28-year-old Cuban has batted just .262 with a .680 OPS in 99 career major league games.
