Summer Of Savings: Free Camps For Kids

BOSTON (CBS) - Summer vacations are beginning and for many kids that means heading off to summer camp.

But if you forgot to book a spot for your child, WBZ-TV's "Summer of Savings" is here to help!

We've found some free camps that will keep your child entertained and educated throughout the summer.

There are options, including a free one that will let your child's creativity run wild and give them a chance to take center stage.

826 Boston is holding a summer theater and writing camp where the students get to try their hands at everything from acting and directing to creating costumes and sets.

The five-week program lets budding young artists hone their skills by creating their own original play. It builds up to a final one-night performance on stage at Harvard University's Repertory Theater.

Students who attend all five weeks of the camp are also eligible for a $200 stipend!

The camp is open to all incoming 8th and 9th grade Boston students.

The deadline to enroll is July 1.

And if theater doesn't interest your child, we have plenty of other free options.

How about an introduction to coding?

At the Microsoft YouthSpark camp, kids learn to code their own video games or create and launch their own apps.

These free camps are held inside Microsoft stores and are geared to children from ages 8 to 18.

Each session lasts for four days for two hours each day. They will continue to be held through August.

Apple stores also hold free camps where kids can learn to create movies or interactive books using Apple products.

Those three-day camps begin in July and run for two hours each day.

Parents do need to stay with their kids at either of these camps.

Here are several more options for the summer:

Tenacity Worcester

Tenacity Boston

South Boston Boys and Girls Club

Boys and Girls Club of Greater Salem

Boys and Girls Club of Greater Lowell

Boys and Girls Club of Taunton
