Medical Device At Center Of Beverly Bertucci's Evacuation

BEVERLY (CBS) -- An unusual item left at a Bertucci's restaurant in Beverly that led to an evacuation Monday turned out to be a medical device accidentally left behind by a patron.

Police and the bomb squad were called to the restaurant on Enon Street around 4:45 p.m. after the device was found. They secured the restaurant and evacuated surrounding businesses. Police said the item was a nylon bag with wires and appeared to be a "hoax device."

But the patron, a man with Parkinson's disease, called the restaurant later in the evening to check if he unknowingly left the item behind.

The homemade medical device is used for electrical stimulation to manage symptoms of  the disease.
