Felger & Mazz: Should Bruins Take Advantage Of Buyout Window?
BOSTON (CBS) -- The window for NHL teams to buy out players opens on Wednesday. Will the Bruins take advantage?
Felger & Mazz discussed their options on Tuesday, and came up with two potential candidates: Forward Jimmy Hayes and defenseman Dennis Seidenberg.
Hayes had a disappointing first season with his hometown B's in 2015-16, scoring just 13 goals in 75 games and finishing a minus-12 for the season.
"He has two years left at a total of $4.9 million. He is 26 now, which means he signed that deal when he was 25 and you'd only have to pay him a third of that contract -- $1.6 million over four years," noted Mazz. "Roughly $400,000 a year and you get rid of him."
Mazz said buying out Hayes is "an easy one," considering how much Boston would save and the roster spot it would open up for a younger player.
Felger would rather see Seidenberg get bought out, which would lower his cap hit from $4 million to $1.2 million per year, stretched out over four years.
"Hayes, at 26, maybe there is someone who bites. Someone who says he still has upside and just didn't go right in Boston. Maybe there is still a return on Hayes. I don't think you're getting anything for Seidenberg," said Felger.
Because of Boston's lack of defense, Mazz said he'd be willing to hang on to Seidenberg.
