Gordie Howe Dies At Age 88

BOSTON (CBS) -- Hockey legend Gordie Howe, known to many as simply "Mr. Hockey," passed away Friday morning at his son Murray's home in Ohio. The former Detroit Red Wings great was 88 years old.

Howe suffered what was reported as a "significant stroke" in October 2014 and his family described his recovery from the stroke as "miraculous."

The Hockey Hall-of-Famer played an NHL record 1,767 games over a 25-year career, famously playing until age 51. He is fourth on the all-time scoring list with 1,850 career points. Known widely as the league's first great "power forward," Howe is second only to Wayne Gretzky with 801 career goals. He won four Stanley Cups with the Red Wings, and was awarded the Hart Trophy as league MVP six times.
