Roslindale Students Thank Firefighters Who Responded To Playground Arson

ROSLINDALE (CBS) -- Students at Sumner Elementary School gathered near their charred playground Tuesday to thank Boston firefighters for their effort to save the park from an act of arson.

The fire set last week destroyed a majority of the equipment.

One by one, students eloquently expressed their feelings about the loss of their playground.

"I feel sorry about the fire because I made so many memories on that playground and now they are all burnt up," one student said.

Three people have been charged in connection with the fire. "It was set by cruel people," another student said.

"Dear Boston Fire Department," one student said. "Thank you for saving our school from the fire. We know you have a dangerous job."

"To recognize the firefighters that actually came and extinguished the fire is tremendous," Boston Fire Commissioner Joe Finn said.

Officials say the fire caused about $10,000 in damages. But the community and local businesses have already raised more than $60,000 to rebuild the playground.
