Is Boston Inching Closer To Driverless Cars?

BOSTON (CBS) -- A world of driverless cars may be closer than you think.

A panel hosted by the city's Urban League Institute (ULI) reflected on that thought Tuesday morning. However, one challenge of bringing driverless cars to Boston is the effort it will take for the city's old infrastructure to adapt to the new technology.

Still, ULI's Executive Director Michelle Landers sees driverless cars as inevitable.

"I think that the technology is closer than we realize," says Landers. "We're seeing lots of investment by major car companies into all kinds of driverless car technology, also driverless bike technology."

Landers thinks the city will see driverless bicycles before driverless cars because the regulatory hurdles won't be as high for bikes as they will be for cars.
