Red Sox Place Blake Swihart, Ryan Hanigan On DL

BOSTON (CBS) -- The Red Sox suffered a serious blow to their depth at the catcher position over the weekend, as Blake Swihart and Ryan Hanigan both sustained injuries during the Red Sox's series against the Toronto Blue Jays.

Swihart severely sprained his left ankle on Saturday after crashing into the side wall in left field on a foul ball. The Red Sox placed him on the 15-day disabled list and he could miss "several weeks," according to Ian Browne of RedSox.com. Hanigan was also placed on the 15-day DL with a neck strain.

"[Swihart]'s going to be immobilized for two weeks, and we'll re-evaluate at that point to see what the next steps are," manager John Farrell told reporters after the game.

The Red Sox purchased the contract of catcher Sandy Leon from Triple-A Pawtucket to make up for the loss of both backup catchers. The team also recalled Rusney Castillo to fill the void in left field.
