Police Officer Dragged 150 Feet By Vehicle After Fight Outside Lowell Bar

LOWELL (CBS) -- A police officer was dragged 150 feet by a vehicle early Saturday morning after responding to a fight outside of a Lowell bar.

Lowell Police were called to the fight near Smokehouse Tavern on Middle Street shortly before 2 a.m.

An officer's attention was directed towards an occupant of the vehicle who was involved in the fight, police say. When the male officer approached the vehicle, police say the driver sped off, driving right at him.

The officer, who has not been identified, fell onto the car and his hand became caught under the windshield wiper. He was dragged for a short time before he was able to free himself.

Police briefly chased the vehicle until it crashed into two parked vehicles. Officers then arrested 25-year-old Marcus Beauchesne of Lowell.

Beauchesne, who was not hurt in the crash, was charged with armed assault with intent to murder, operating to endanger, operating after suspension, failure to stop for police officer, assault and battery and speeding.

The officer was treated for non-life-threatening injuries at Lowell General Hospital and later released.

Investigators say there was a female passenger in the vehicle, but she is not being charged at this time. No other arrests have been made in connection to this incident, police said.
