David Price Mourns Loss Of Vanderbilt Pitcher Donny Everett On Twitter

BOSTON (CBS) -- David Price will take the mound with a heavy heart on Friday night.

The Red Sox ace is mourning the loss of Vanderbilt pitcher Donny Everett, who died Thursday night in a drowning accident. Everett was just 19 years old.

Everett, a promising young arm who had just finished his freshman season at Vanderbilt, was fishing with teammates and friends when he tried to swim across a lake in Tennessee. He made it halfway across before he was pulled under and never resurfaced, according to a report from the Coffee County Sheriff's Department.

The team was notified by coach Tim Corbin of Everett's death on Friday morning, and decided to play their NCAA Tournament Regional opener against Xavier on Friday night.

Price spent three seasons at Vanderbilt before being drafted first overall by the Tampa Bay Rays in 2007. He's scheduled to start for the Red Sox on Friday night as they open a three-game series against the Toronto Blue Jays at Fenway Park.
