Proposal Calls For Boston Public Schools To Test Drinking Water Yearly

BOSTON (CBS) -- Only a handful of parents attended a meeting Friday at the Curley K-8 School in Jamaica Plain where water fountains have been shut off for weeks due to elevated levels of lead.

Operations administrator Edward Lee told WBZ NewsRadio 1030's Bernice Corpuz "some of the fountains passed, but others did not."

He says students and staff must drink bottled water until further tests can be conducted.

"We will be testing all of these fountains again in August," he said, "And anything that passes will not be put online until it passes three tests."

The triple-check system is part of a new water policy unveiled last week. Under the proposal, the district would test the water used for drinking and food service annually.

"The policy is much more stringent than even the federal and state standards," Lee said. "It is really based on the safety of our children."

The new policy, which does not include testing of water from bathroom and classroom sinks, is still subject to a school committee vote.
