Jackie Bradley Jr. Named AL Player Of The Month For May

BOSTON (CBS) -- Jackie Bradley Jr. lit the world on fire in the month of May, and Major League Baseball took notice.

As a result, Bradley was named the American League Player of the Month for May.

Bradley recorded at least one hit in 25 of 27 games played in May, which saw him ride a hitting streak to 29 games. In the month of May, he batted .381 with a 1.175 OPS, on the strength of seven doubles and eight home runs. He drove in 24 runs and walked 17 times in the month as well, with the Red Sox going 17-10 in games in which Bradley played.

During the month of May, Bradley ranked first in OBP (.474), second in batting average (.381), second in slugging percentage (.701), and third in walks (17).

Bradley, 26, left the team this week for paternity leave. The last Red Sox players to win a Player of the Month honor were Dustin Pedroia in July 2011 and Adrian Gonzalez one month earlier. Prior to that, it was David Ortiz (May 2010, September 2007, July 2006, September 2005), J.D. Drew (June 2008) and Manny Ramirez (September 2002, April 2001).
