State Department Issues Alert For Passengers Traveling To Europe

BOSTON (CBS) -- The US State Department has issued a new summer travel alert for people heading to Europe.

The warning comes after terror attacks in Paris last November and in Brussels a couple months ago.

"The large number of tourists visiting Europe in the summer months will present greater targets for terrorists planning attacks in public locations, especially at large events," the warning reads.

The news came just as Massachusetts resident Michelle Fontaine-Calkins was about to board a plane from Logan Airport to Germany.

"You can't live in fear," she told WBZ-TV.

She already re-booked it once after cancelling earlier this year in the wake of the Paris attacks.

"I just felt uneasy," she said, so she "put it off."

WBZ security analyst Ed Davis says it's not the federal government's top level alert, but it makes sense.

"These two attacks in the last few months have really raised people's concerns, and have also made it clear that ISIS is operational in Europe," Davis said.

The State Department is aiming its warning at people traveling to major events like the European Soccer Championship in France, the Tour De France, and the Catholic Church's World Youth Day in Poland.

The travel alert and extra security will be in effect through August.
