Bill Buckner On Infamous 1986 World Series Error: '(Expletive) Happens'

BOSTON (CBS) – It's been 30 years since Red Sox first baseman Bill Buckner committed one of the most infamous errors in baseball history.

On Wednesday Buckner was warmly welcomed back to Fenway Park as a part of a ceremony honoring the 1986 American League champions, and showed he has a sense of humor about the iconic play.

"Hey," Buckner told reporters before the on-field ceremony, "(Expletive) happens."

Buckner was referencing his error in Game 6 of the 1986 World Series against the New York Mets.

With the Red Sox leading the Mets and closing in on an elusive World Series victory, Buckner couldn't pull in a soft ground ball to first base.

The Mets tied the game, and eventually won to knot the series.

"My thought after we lost the sixth game, we lost momentum, things weren't looking good," Buckner told reporters on Wednesday. "But when I was walking off the field my first thought was 'I get to play in the seventh game of the World Series how cool is that?'"

The Red Sox went on to lose Game 7 as well.

This is not Buckner's first return to Fenway Park. In previous appearances he received a warm welcome, as he did from fans when he was introduced on Wednesday.
