Report: Dion Lewis Will Likely Be Ready To Play In Patriots' Season Opener

BOSTON (CBS) -- The timeline on every individual knee recovery is different, and so it's always hard to project when a player might be able to return to the football field after suffering a torn ACL. But the early report on Patriots running back Dion Lewis is positive.

ESPN's Mike Reiss reported that people close to Lewis believe the running back is "about one month away from being able to play in a game." With Week 1 more than three months away, that puts Lewis on track to be ready to go for the start of the season.

Lewis, 25, played seven games for the Patriots last season before tearing his knee against the Redskins in Week 8 on Nov. 8. He rushed for 234 yards and two touchdowns on 49 carries (4.8 YPC) while catching 36 passes for 388 yards and another two touchdowns. He made the most of his touches, too, as 31 of his 85 touches resulted in first downs. In total, 41.2 percent of his touches resulted in either a first down or a touchdown.

Health has been Lewis' toughest opponent in the NFL. He suffered a broken leg in 2013 and missed the whole season, and he struggled to find a job in 2014. He found one in 2015, though, and if all goes according to plan, he'll play a prominent role in a high-powered offense in New England in 2016.
