Bruins Promote Bruce Cassidy, Jay Pandolfo To Assistant Coaching Positions

BOSTON (CBS) -- Boston Bruins GM Don Sweeney announced Tuesday that the team has hired Providence Bruins head coach Bruce Cassidy as an assistant coach, in addition to promoting Director of Player Development Jay Pandolfo to an assistant coaching position. The team also announced that assistant coach Doug Jarvis will not return.

Cassidy previously coached the Washington Capitals from 2002-04 and served as an assistant coach for the Chicago Blackhawks in the 2005-06 season before coaching in Providence. Pandolfo, a Burlington, Mass. native and former standout for 1995 NCAA champion Boston University, formerly "aided in the development of the team's drafted prospects throughout the system," according to a team press release.

The Bruins also hired Paul Whissel as Director of Sports Performance and Rehab. According to the release, Whissel will "oversee the Bruins' current strength training, medical and rehab staff."

Cassidy and Pandolfo's promotions to the NHL club signal that the team is "committed to [the] development of young players while in [the] NHL," according to a tweet from CBS Boston Bruins writer Matt Kalman. Sweeney preached patience with younger talent in the system in his season-ending press conference.
