Gov. Charlie Baker's Mother Dies At 84
BOSTON (CBS) – Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker's mother has died at 84 years old.
The governor's office confirmed the death of Alice Elizabeth Baker, known as Betty.
In a Facebook post on Saturday night, Baker said his mother "taught everyone about life, love, service and sacrifice."
Betty Baker previously battled Alzheimer's disease.
Gov. Baker gave the commencement speech for Westfield State University on Saturday in Springfield as scheduled.
During his speech, Baker alluded to his mother's death.
"I would love to hang around and hear what your class president has to say, and watch the entire ceremony but unfortunately I have a death in my family and I have to get back to them," Baker told students.
Boston Mayor Marty Walsh shared his condolences to the Baker family on Twitter.
Coincidentally Ann Romney, wife of former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, was in Boston on Saturday at an event raising money for Alzheimer's research.
"Every 66 seconds someone is diagnosed with Alzheimer's. Two-thirds of those people will be women," Ann Romney said at the event. "Why do women's brains get Alzheimer's more than men's brains? Some of the money we're raising today we want to fund research to help answer those questions."
Details on services for Betty Baker have not yet been announced.
