Red Sox Recall Blake Swihart; Place Brock Holt On Concussion DL, Carson Smith On 15-Day DL

BOSTON (CBS) -- Blake Swihart has spent the last month learning to play left field with the Pawtucket Red Sox. Now he might have to show what he's learned in the big leauges a little earlier than expected.

With Brock Holt landing on the seven-day concussion disabled list, Swihart was recalled from Triple-A on Friday. He hit .243 (going 25-for-103 at the plate) with four doubles and a home run in 29 games with the PawSox after being optioned on April 15, making 14 starts at catcher and 11 in left field.

Holt has struggled as of late, hitting just .132 over his last 32 games. He has just four extra base hits in that span.

But the struggling left fielder isn't the only member of the team to be sidelined on Friday as reliever Carson Smith was also placed on the 15-day disabled list with right elbow soreness. That move is retroactive to May 15.

Smith made three appearances for the Red Sox this season, allowing one unearned run on two hits with one walk and two strikeouts over 2.2 innings. He started the season on the DL with a with a right flexor muscle strain and was activated on May 3 after making a pair of rehab outings with Double-A Portland.

In addition to Swihart, reliever Noe Ramirez was also recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket for his fourth major league stint with the Red Sox this season. Ramirez has appeared in nine games for the club, posting no record with a 5.79 ERA (6 ER over 9.1 innings) and 10 strikeouts.
