Improper Disposal Of Smoking Materials Cause Of Fatal Northbridge Duplex Fire

NORTHBRIDGE (CBS) -- Fire officials have ruled that improper disposal of smoking materials was the cause of last weekend's house fire in Northbridge that killed two women.

The fire started on the couch in the first floor living room of the 2-family duplex and quickly spread throughout the home. Neighbors tried unsuccessfully to rescue the women trapped inside.

Family members say 22-year-old Nicole Lavalle and 22-year-old Jordan Fontaine were killed in the blaze.

Officials say there were no working smoke detectors in the home.

"I ask every tenant, every landlord and every homeowner to make sure all smoke alarms are working and that they are less than ten years old," State Fire Marshal Peter Ostroskey said in a public statement.
