In Total, 14 Players & Coaches Disciplined For Rangers - Blue Jays Brawl

By Matt Dolloff, CBS Boston

BOSTON (CBS) -- The moment Texas Rangers second baseman Rougned Odor's fist connected with Toronto Blue Jays right fielder Jose Bautista's chin, you knew things were going to get wild - and expensive - for many people involved.

The two-stage battle royale, which started with Odor and Bautista then continued when the Jays retaliated by plunking the Rangers' Prince Fielder in the following half-inning, earned Odor the biggest penalty of them all, an eight-game suspension. Toronto reliever Jesse Chavez was hit with a three-game suspension for intentionally throwing at Fielder after warnings were issued to both teams. Rangers pitcher Matt Bush received a fine for the Bautista beanball that sparked the whole incident.

Bautista and Rangers shortstop Elvis Andrus each received one-game suspensions. Bautista reportedly got suspended for both his involvement in the brawl and "his postgame comments," in which he called the Rangers' actions "cowardly," according to MLB.com. Both Bautista and Odor plan to appeal their suspensions.

Fines for "aggressive actions" were handed out to Blue Jays third baseman Josh Donaldson and center fielder Kevin Pillar, as well as Rangers pitcher Sam Dyson and bench coach Steve Buechele. The Rangers' A.J. Griffin and Robinson Chirinos were both fined for "going onto the field while being on the disabled list."

The penalties also extended to the coaching staffs. Blue Jays manager John Gibbons received a three-game suspension for returning to the field after being ejected while Toronto first base coach Tim Leiper received a game for returning to the dugout after an ejection. Blue Jays bench coach DeMarlo Hale received a fine for being deemed to have ordered Chavez intentionally throw at Fielder after warnings were issued.

These incidents get messy on the field, and the resulting punishments out of the front office are no less ugly. Bautista, however, escapes the debacle with at worst a one-game suspension, which if upheld would likely be served before the Blue Jays host the Red Sox on Friday, May 27.
