Worcester Woman, 113, Becomes Oldest Person In United States

WORCESTER (CBS) – The oldest living person in the United States is a Worcester resident.

Clark University said Monday that alumna Goldie Michelson, who graduated in 1936, has become the oldest living person in America, and the oldest Jew in the world.

Michelson is 113 years old and will turn 114 in August, according to Clark.

She assumes the title after Susannah Mushatt Jones died in New York at age 116 last week.

In an interview with Clark's magazine in 2012, Michelson said she attributed her extraordinary longevity to walking.

"I was a great walker — four or five miles every morning, weather permitting. I never used a car if I could walk," she said. "One of the great joys of life was when I sold my car."

She also said she never smoked or drank, but admitted to being a chocolate lover.

The Michelson Theater at Clark is named in her honor.
