Phantom Gourmet: Uncle Charlie's Finer Diner In Weymouth
WEYMOUTH - Nothing could be finer than to be in South Weymouth in the morning, because that's where you'll find some serious breakfast eats at Uncle Charlie's Finer Diner. Located on Route 18, this casual spot has been serving comfort food classics for 27 years, in a no frills space where the focus is on the food. No one will make you feel more at home than owner Charlie Wilson.
"We're open from 7:00-3:00, and if you want a fish and chips at 8:00 in the morning, you've got it. If you want to have breakfast at 2:30, you have it. We do it all."

When it comes to the breakfast offerings, Uncle Charlie's is not your average greasy spoon, serving spectacular quiches, overstuffed omelets, and southern style classics like Biscuits and Gravy. There are sweet starts to your day like fluffy pancakes spiked with chocolate chips and banana slices and served with warm syrup; or the indulgent Bread Pudding French Toast.
"It's basically a French toast, bread pudding style, instead of just regular bread," Charlie explained. "It's like eating dessert for breakfast."
If you're looking for a little lunch meets breakfast, order the Burger Benedict topped with housemade hollandaise and served alongside crispy home fries. Or check out Uncle Charlie's signature dish, the Pot Roast and Eggs. It's an unexpected plate that puzzled some customers when Charlie put it on the menu.
"A lot of people said pot roast and eggs? And I would always state the fact that you'll get a steak and eggs, so why wouldn't you get a pot roast and eggs?"
"We slow roast it for about five or six hours. That's what makes it tender, just simmering in the juices; absolutely delicious. You can eat it with a fork."
If you're really hungry, you'll definitely want to get a hold of Uncle Charlie's Jumbo Breakfast Sandwich.
"It's a sausage patty, a potato patty, with an egg, some bacon, ham, and a bagel. It's huge and it definitely fills you up," Charlie promised.
Or check the Twin Skins, a breakfast style appetizer that will have you seeing double.
"Twin Skins are basically baked potato skins, with corn beef hash, served with two eggs, topped with cheddar or hollandaise sauce," Charlie described. "Absolutely delicious."
The daily specials at Uncle Charlies are so special, that servers parade them around the dining room to tempt potential customers.
"We make a couple of plates and we have the girls walk around and show them our specials, because we feel in a diner the menu is so large that it's hard to make a decision."
The one special that you must try is Uncle Charlie's Beef Pot Pie.
"Our beef pot pie is like a little thicker version of a great beef stew," Charlie said. "It's got the carrots, potatoes, the gravy, the whole nine yards. Then we put the puff pastry on the top of that. It's enough for two people."
But if you want something that's always on the menu, there is no dish quite like the classic American Chop Suey, made fresh the minute you order it.
"The special thing about the American Chop Suey is we cook it all to order. We bring out the macaroni; we take some fresh Black Angus beef, peppers, onions, mushrooms; sauté it all up together on the grill; throw a little sauce on it. Stir it up and you've got a nice, fresh, hot American Chop Suey."
After decades and decades of working in the restaurant business, there's no place that this uncle would rather be.
"I love when I see people happy. That's why I keep doing it."
