Report: Edelman Underwent Left Foot Surgery, Should Be Healthy For Training Camp

BOSTON (CBS) --Julian Edelman's foot injury, which kept him off the field for the final seven weeks of the regular season, required the receiver to undergo offseason surgery, according to Adam Schefter and Mike Reiss.

The ESPN report characterized the surgery as a "cleanup procedure" and one that isn't expected to force Edelman to miss any time.

An argument could be made that, outside of Tom Brady, Edelman was the most important offensive player on the Patriots last year. The team went 9-0 with him and 3-4 without him during the regular season.

Edelman did return for the playoffs, and he looked like his old self in the divisional round, when he caught 10 passes for 100 yards. He was decidedly less impactful the following week in the AFC Championship Game, on natural grass, when he caught seven passes for 53 yards.

Edelman's certainly absorbed a beating over the years, with his 327 receptions as well as his 142 punt returns. The addition of Cyrus Jones via the draft is likely to lessen the load on Edelman in the special teams game in 2016.

Edelman suffered the injury --  a Jones fracture in his foot --  in Week 9 while getting tackled by Giants linebacker Jasper Brinkley.
