Stranded Harbor Seal Overcomes Incredible Odds To Survive

BOURNE (CBS) -- A harbor seal found stranded on a Provincetown shore is truly a survivor.

The seal, named Onion Flake, has been through almost every health issue known to his kind.  When rescuers first brought him in, Onion was suffering from a high fever, cuts and lacerations all over his body, difficulty breathing, and pneumonia.

Two weeks into treatment he looked better until he developed a severe infection which left him blind in one eye. Then, he developed an ear infection, which required surgery. He then was diagnosed with sealpox.

Kate Schaffer, Director of Marine Animal Rehabilitation, says Onion is about ready to go back into the wild.

"For us it's really a happy time, a joyous thing for us to put this animal whose made it through everything back out where he belongs," Schaffer said.

The National Marine Life Center is now fundraising for a satellite tag so they can let him go.
