MIT Marks 100th Anniversary Of Move To Cambridge With Floating Parade
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (AP) — MIT is celebrating the 100th anniversary of its move from Boston to Cambridge with a quirky parade over land and water.
The centerpiece of Saturday's "Moving Day" event is an afternoon parade of more than 50 boats, floats and vehicles designed and built by students, faculty, staff and alumni.
The roughly 90-minute "Crossing the Charles" procession begins on the Boston side of the Charles River and is meant to commemorate the moment when MIT's charter was ceremonially transported across the river by barge in 1916.
The event is a competition and teams will be scored on engineering design, speed, aesthetics and other qualities.
Saturday's other festivities include fireworks, student performances, a multimedia show and a series of dance parties that run until midnight.
