Driver Texting At 50 MPH Narrowly Misses Tree, Police Say
WEST BRIDGEWATER (CBS) – It was a very close call for a young driver that police said was texting behind the wheel Thursday night.
West Bridgewater police said they received multiple calls about a car traveling 50 mph in a 30 mph zone on Scotland Street. When they got to the scene, officers found a car in an off-road ditch.
"The juvenile operator admitted to looking down and texting while driving," police said.
The driver was hospitalized, but was fortunate to avoid a large tree nearby.
Police cited the driver for negligent operation of a motor vehicle, texting while driving, marked lanes violation and speeding.
Dozens of Massachusetts drivers have been cited for texting behind the wheel in recent weeks, as the state has launched a campaign to crack down on distracted driving.
"This incident is a strong reminder of the dangers of texting and distracted driving," West Bridgewater police said. "Please put your phones down and pay attention to driving."
